The Green Cross Man was created in 1975 as part of the government's campaign to teach young children how to safely cross the road. British actor David Prowse MBE, a bodybuilder and former Mr. Universe who had, at the time just featured in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange and later featured as Darth Vader in the Star Wars franchise, played the character in a well-known series of Public Information Films.
